National Arts Centre

The Urban Group of the RA Photo Club organized a visit to the (mostly completed) renovation of the National Arts Centre in central Ottawa. I was quite impressed with the renovation and quite enjoyed having an opportunity to photograph it during a quiet part of the day. I mostly concentrated on the small details of the facility, looking for interesting shapes and colours. As often happens, sometimes a group of photographers will gather around a particular feature that they all find interesting, and other times we’d be looking at completely different things and pursuing different ideas.

The designers may not have intended people to study the NAC floor, but I found some interesting geometrical patterns, such as shown here.

Beautiful red chairs are a standout feature of the lobby area, and offer endless possibliities for abstract compositions such as this.

I have taken great liberty to change the colours in this shot of patterns on a wall created by recessed lighting.

This detail of one of the bar areas reminds me of an industrial scene, and I have toned it accordingly.

This is very much a study of lines, with a diagonal of circles to add further interest.

I'm sure passers by thought I was crazy to photograph paper held in place by blue translucent tape in a construction area, but look at the intense colour created by the sunlight.

Purely a study of geometry and symmetry, this shot required careful camera positioning to get just right.

Here we see a juxtaposition of the familiar (a bottle) with an unfamiliar (the reflection).
