Carleton University Butterfly Show
I once again attended the annual butterfly show at Carleton University. The show takes place in the Fall at a greenhouse of the Nesbitt Biology Building. It is open to the general public and groups on a donation basis. In our case, the Urban Group of the RA Photo Club reserved a group visit. This provided about 20 RA Photo Club members an hour's exclusive access to the butterflies. Butterflies are challenging to photograph. They usually don't stay still for long. The greenhouse light is very contrasty. There are harshly lit spots intermixed with areas of deep shadow. Getting a good angle with a good background is also quite tricky. In my case, I chose to bring my mid-range zoom lens this year, and that worked out well. The lens focuses close, which was welcome in the cramped quarters, but still has good reach when needed. The hour flew by! As always, I wish there was more time, but I'm happy with the shots I came away with of these beautiful creatures.
