2017 Fall Challenge

2017 Fall Challenge

Each year, the Nature Group of the RA Photo Club organizes an outing called the Fall Challenge. This is a friendly competition where participants photograph at the same location for the day, for as long as they want, and afterwards submit their eight best photos that club members score. This year two locations near to each other were offered: Blakeney Rapids and the Mill of Kintail Conservation Area. CLICK HERE to see some of my shots from these locations.

Farewell Jack Starkings

Farewell Jack Starkings

My friend Jack Starkings passed away on July 30, 2017 at 90 years of age after having suffered several strokes. He and I joined the RA Photo Club at about the same time a bit more than 10 years ago and soon became friends. We were part of a loosely knit group that often went on outings together and sat together at club meetings. We shared many good times. He will be sorely missed.

An Outing to Shirley's Bay

An Outing to Shirley's Bay

An outing was suggested to Shirley's Bay, which is part of the National Capital Commission greenbelt in Ottawa. I was especially interested to go because I've driven past this area literally hundreds of times (I used to work nearby), but had never seen this particular parkland area. CLICK HERE to see some of the photographs I took that day.

Upper Canada Village

Upper Canada Village

A friend and I made another visit to Upper Canada Village in May 2017. I've been to the village many times, but this time I wanted to try something a bit different. Instead of taking mainly telephoto shots of details, I challenged myself to shoot with a wide angle lens for the day and specifically to take photos of some of the reenactors (i.e., people). CLICK HERE to judge for yourself how successful you think I was.

Limerick Forest at the End of Winter

Limerick Forest at the End of Winter

I had an opportunity to visit Limerick Forest in March 2017 during an open house event. Normally, we'd have lots of snow at that time of year, but that winter was especially warm and when I arrived I discovered that there was very little snow on the ground. So what do you do when there's no snow to photograph? You photograph ice! CLICK HERE to see some of my photos from that memorable day.

Second Visit to the Aviation Museum

Second Visit to the Aviation Museum

I enjoyed my prior photographic visit to the Canadian Aviation and Space Museum in 2016, so I jumped at the chance to visit again when the Urban Group of the RA Photo Club secured another opportunity in 2017. To keep things fresh, I decided to concentrate on different subjects than the first visit. CLICK HERE to see some of my photos from this return trip.

2016 Iron Butt Road Trip

2016 Iron Butt Road Trip

Most years, the Urban Group of the RA Photo Club organize an outing they call the Iron Butt. The premise is that an out of town location and time is picked for the participants to gather for dinner, people organize themselves into cars however they like, and the day is spent by the cars taking independent routes through back roads and odd directions till they finally meet up to eat together and swap stories of where they've been. Along the way, of course, everyone takes photographs! In 2016, the destination was Perth, Ontario. CLICK HERE to see some of my shots from this adventure.
